At the risk of outing myself as a crazy cat lady, I have to make a full confession. I talk to my cats. As if they understood me. And when they meow back, it’s almost like a conversation. Which is why I absolutely love this commercial:
While Joey & Andy likely understand English about as well as I understand Meow, we both understand the tone of our respective languages. I’ve read that adult cats don’t meow to each other, rather the meows are for us humans. In doing some quick research on the subject (and by research I mean Googling), I found a news release from Cornell University a few years ago where a grad student, Nicholas Nicastro, conducted a study on cat meows. But my favourite line in the whole release is his quote below:
“Cats are domesticated animals that have learned what levers to push, what sounds to make to manage our emotions,” Nicastro says. “And when we respond, we too are domesticated animals.”
It’s what I’ve always believed about cats and dogs; dogs have masters, cats have staff.
(As usual, my blog titles are song titles. Today’s is “The Special Two” by Missy Higgins)
