My friend, Andy, introduced me to the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde.
Thursday Next is the main character of alternate history novels by the British author Jasper Fforde. In the world of Thursday Next, literature is a much more popular medium than in our world, and Thursday is a member of Special Operatives (SpecOps), known as the Literary Detectives or LiteraTecs.
There are 5 books so far: The Eyre Affair, Lost In A Good Book, The Well of Lost Plots, Something Rotten, and First Among Sequels. The 6th book, One of Our Thursdays Is Missing, will be released in March.
These books are filled with literary “inside jokes”, so you might want to brush up on some reading to fully appreciate the humour in Fforde’s writing.
I just finished book #3 and #4 over the Christmas break, and I’m taking a break from the series to read a few other books (plus wait for #6 to come out), and these are my favourite quotes from each book:
“After all, reading is arguably a far more creative and imaginative process than writing; when the reader creates emotion in their head, or the colors of the sky during the setting sun, or the smell of a warm summer’s breeze on their face, they should reserve as much praise for themselves as the do for the writer – perhaps more.”
— Jasper Fforde (Well of Lost Plots)
“If the real world were a book, it would never find a publisher. Overlong, detailed to the point of distraction-and ultimately, without a major resolution.”
— Jasper Fforde (Something Rotten)
